Hash Generator

Calculate multiple hashes from text or a file in your browser, without uploading your input.

File

The most recently edited input is calculated automatically. The result heading identifies the input.

Your text and files are processed only in this browser and are not sent to the server.

How to use

Editing text calculates it about 250ms after typing stops. Selecting or dropping a file calculates it immediately. Only the most recently edited input is shown, with its source and file name above the results. Switching input clears previous results and stops active calculations. Removing the active file returns to text. Copy individual values or all results; restart a cancelled calculation with Recalculate.

What is a hash?

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. Even a small change produces a different value. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are useful for checking file integrity. Compare a downloaded file with a hash provided by a trusted source.

Frequently asked questions

How is text encoded?

Text is encoded as UTF-8 without adding a BOM. Spaces and line breaks are included; browser text fields use LF line endings. Files are hashed as their original bytes, including any BOM and original line endings. File names do not affect the hash.

Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 is a common choice. MD5 and SHA-1 are included for compatibility and are not suitable for security uses that require collision resistance. RIPEMD-160 is included for older systems. These fast hashes are not suitable for storing passwords.

Can I hash large files?

Files are read in chunks and calculated in a background worker. Large files take longer, depending on your device. You can cancel at any time.
